Based in Mobile, Alabama, the six members of The Canebrake Poets are Carol Case, Keri Coumanis, Vernon Fowlkes, Jr., Diane Garden, Celia Lewis, and Alabama Poet Laureate Sue Walker.
Formed in the Fall of 2006, the group began
with the modest intent to simply critique each other’s work and encourage one another in the writing life. In a few short years, however, the group had evolved into something more.
Now a true performing troupe, The Canebrake Poets are delighting audiences on the Gulf Coast with readings of their poems that range from the comic to the sublime and every permutation in between. In addition to readings, look for a book of the group’s collected works, to be published by Negative Capability Press in 2012.
